Athletes are grouped by age and then by ability within the groups. GSC follows USSA age group guidelines. U8 (under 8 years old on January 1), U10, U12, U14, U16, U19 and U21. Morning training times vary but typically are from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM (U8 athletes 8:45 AM to 2:00 PM).
U16 and older athletes often train together and may train earlier to get access to terrain not available for training when the entire mountain is open.
GSC is an alpine racing program, but not all athletes choose to race, and it is not a requirement. U8 athletes do not travel to participate in races. U10 athletes may compete in open races when the organizing club permits it.
U12 to U14 athletes participate in open races, NHARA qualifiers, and for those that qualify, NHARA, Francis Piche Invitational and and U14 Eastern Championship events.
U16 athletes also compete in the Tecnica Cup and/or Macomber Cup race series. Some U-16’s qualify for USSA Eastern Region and National events. U-19 and U-21 athletes participate in open races, Tec. and Mac. Cup races, and various other USSA, NHARA and FIS sanctioned races.
